Sligo motorist among hundreds clocked speeding on Slow Down Day



A motorist in Sligo was among the 665 people who were clocked speeding during National Slow Down Day yesterday.

The incident took place along the N17 at Achonry.

The driver in question was stopped at Tobertelly, and was clocked travelling at 116 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

Over 157,000 vehicles were checked by Gardaí throughout the 24-hour campaign, with a large number of detections made.

In one instance, a vehicle in Tullamore, Co.Offaly was detected traveling at 136km/h in a 50km/h zone. The driver was arrested for dangerous driving and charged by Gardaí.

While another vehicle was detected travelling at 162 km/h in a 100km/h zone in Oranmore, Co.Galway at 7.10pm on Monday evening. The driver was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and appeared before Tullamore District Court earlier today.

Following the deaths of 127 people on Irish roads so far this year, Gardaí are reminding drivers to slow down and drive safely.
