Sligo County Council give assurances over Sligo Cemetery upkeep

Sligo County Council have given assurances that staff will maintain the upkeep of Sligo Cemetery.

Areas of the cemetery, particularly the Old Cemetery, have become overgrown and unkept, much to the frustration to people who have family members buried there.

In a statement released to Ocean FM News this afternoon, Sligo County Council say that the care and maintenance of individual plots at Sligo Cemetery is overseen by family owners of the private plots, and that the Council encourages the appropriate level of care and maintenance of cemetery plots to present the cemetery in good condition.

The statement goes on to say that Sligo County Council will continue to manage and maintain footpaths at Sligo Cemetery, and undertake weed maintenance and mowing of specific areas within the cemetery.

The Council also say staff who are currently undertaking maintenance will continue to manage and maintain all areas of Sligo Cemetery.

It was revealed last year that two members who had been working in the cemetery had been suspended with full pay, which ultimately led to questions over the upkeep of the cemetery.
