It’s reported that a Sligo councillor is coming under pressure to resign or face losing party support.
It comes as People Before Profit councillor Gino O’Boyle is facing a motion by his party that says he breached party policy by voting for a Fianna Fáil mayor.
Earlier this year, councillor Tom MacSharry was voted mayor of the Sligo-Strandhill electoral area with councillor Gino O’Boyle among those voting for him.
There was some controversy around the vote, however, as newly elected councillors Fergal Nealon and Nessa Cosgrove voiced their concerns over the nomination system.
The Irish Independent is reporting that a confidential People Before Profit briefing before its National Council meeting on September 14 shows the Cork branch of the party has accused councllor O’Boyle of breaching a party local election promise not to back the government parties of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael for any mayoral positions.
The motion calls for councillor O’Boyle to resign as deputy mayor of Sligo Borough and warns that his action could be damaging nationally for the party.
Councillor O’Boyle has been contacted for comment.
