Extra-time heartbreak for Sligo Rovers U20s

Sligo Rovers under-20 men’s soccer team were edged out by UCD after extra-time in Saturday night’s Enda McGuill Cup final at UCD Bowl – as the students won 2-1.

Gareth McElroy had given Rovers the dream start after just four minutes, heading home from a corner.

But UCD levelled through Cathal McCarthy to take the final to extra-time.

In the extra period, Roy Lawlor put the students 2-1 up.

Rovers will feel hard done by after Daire Patton’s goal following an impressive Rovers counter-attack was adjudged to be offside, even though video footage of the goal appeared to suggest Patton had timed his run perfectly.

Rovers U20 boss Declan Boyle spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s Dónal Ryan after the game.

Rovers u20s now turn their attention back to the league as they get ready to play Galway Utd on Wednesday night.
