SUH once again features in top list of most overcrowded hospitals

Sligo University Hospital has once again featured in the top list of the most overcrowded hospitals in Ireland.

The INMO has today released its figures for the month of September.

A total of 736 people waited for a bed at Sligo University Hospital over the course of last month.

Sligo has been ranked as the fourth most overcrowded hospital in Ireland for September.

The figure does however reflect a decrease when compared to the same period last year, when 775 people waited for a bed at the facility in September of 2023.

Elsewhere, there’s been a big drop in the number of people waiting at Letterkenny, with 313 waiting for a bed there this September, compared with 580 in September of last year.

Nationally, over 9,600 patients have been treated in hospital without a bed this September according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

The INMO is calling for an immediate end to all recruitment caps and the urgent implementation of the government’s safe staffing framework to help manage the current increase in hospital overcrowding.
