Roisín Molloy & Athlone Town clinch League of Ireland title

Gurteen’s Roisín Molloy and Athlone Town were crowned women’s SSE Airtricity League Premier Division champions on Saturday night thanks to a 2-0 win against Bohemians.

Goals from Madison Gibson and Kellie Brennan at Athlone Town Stadium saw them become just the fifth different team to win the league title since 2012.

Even though Shelbourne had moved level on points with Athlone following their 3-0 victory over Peamount United earlier in the day, Athlone held a better head-to-head record and thus secure the League with one game still to play (away to Galway United on Saturday, October 12th) with this 15th win of the season.

Elsewhere, bottom of the table Sligo Rovers picked up their first league victory of the season with a.2-1 win against Cork City at St Colman’s Park.

Goals from Muireann Devaney and Eimear Lafferty helped them collect all three points at the end of a week which saw the team’s head coach Tommy Hewitt part company with the club.
