Sligo Rovers boss John Russell signs contract extension

Sligo Rovers manager John Russell has been given a two-year contract extension at the Showgrounds.

The new deal, announced on Saturday by the club, will keep Russell in charge of the men’s first team until the end of the 2026 season.

The new contract is a fitting recognition for Russell’s work in guiding the team to business end of this season’s SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.

With four games remaining, Rovers are still in with a shout of a European finish.

Russell, who won two FAI Cups with the club as a player, took over in the summer of 2022 having served as assistant to former manager Liam Buckley for three and a half seasons.

In his first season in charge, Rovers enjoyed a memorable run in the Europa Conference League, securing victories against Bala Town, Motherwell and Viking of Norway.

His tenure hit rocky spells with Rovers displaying wildly fluctuating form during the 2023 season.

However, Russell re-built his squad in the close season and the new arrivals, coupled with the existing home grown talent, not to mention the return of goalkeeper Ed McGinty on loan from Oxford United, have all helped to produce a highly encouraging 2024 campaign.

The club has rewarded that progress with a two-year contract extension for the manager.

Derry City v Sligo Rovers will be live in full on oceanfm.ie this Monday evening, Oct 14th.
Kick-off: 7.15pm. Commentary from Austin O’Callaghan & Tony Gorman.
