Taoiseach to investigate north west mackerel overfishing

The Taoiseach has confirmed that he will look to escalate the issue of Norwegian and Faroese overfishing on Irish waters, including those off the north west coast.

The European Commission is being urged to block vessels amid fears of overfishing, while local fisheries are stuck with limited quotas.

The Irish Fish Producers Organisation say Ireland’s small fishing fleet stands to lose up to €17 million in 2025 from a proposed mackerel cut.

Cork South West TD Christopher O’Sullivan raised the issue on the floor of the Dáil and outlined the precarious position the industry is in.

Responding, Taoiseach Simon Harris says he will liaise with Minister for Agriculture and Marine and Donegal TD Charlie McConalogue on the matter.
