Taoiseach to miss Enniskillen commemoration

It’s emerged that Taoiseach Simon Harris will not attend the annual Remembrance Sunday commemorative ceremony in Enniskillen.

The Irish Independent is reporting that due to advice from his “most senior officials”, the Taoiseach will instead be represented by Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys.

His absence will mark a break in tradition of the sitting Taoiseach attending the event with Enda Kenny the first to do so in 2012.

Eleven people who had gathered to pay their respects to the war dead were killed and dozens injured in the no-warning blast in November 1987, minutes before the Remembrance Sunday ceremony was due to start.

A 12th victim of the bombing died 13 years later having never woken from a coma.
