GAA struggles to find players to train in small rural towns like Ardara



The new Donegal Person of the Year says areas like Ardara don’t have the GAA players to train anymore because they are all leaving to get work in the cities.

Stephen McCahill, who is from Glenties but who lives in Ardara says attracting young people back to rural Ireland is one of the biggest challenges facing counties like Donegal.

The government’s new ‘Rural Renewal’ programme announced yesterday has been criticised as short-sighted but Mr. McCahill says he hopes it will help.

He set up his own company Glenard Fish in 1991 and he says at the time there was little support for entrepreneurs but now things are improving.

Speaking to Ocean FM News today, Mr. McCahill says there’s been an evident ‘exodus’ from rural areas which is clear from his work in the GAA:
