Energia’s south Donegal windfarm project starts providing power to the grid

South Donegal is now home to Ireland’s largest windfarm which has started to produce power to homes and businesses across the country.

The 95 MW Meenadreen windfarm consists of 38 turbines and can produce enough electricity to power 50,000 homes, according to the developer behind the project Energia.

The company has already a number of windfarms across the country including in projects in county Sligo, Donegal and in Leitrim.

Energia says today’s announcement is the result of years of development work and construction, which started in 2014 and took 26 months to complete.

Energia Renewables has invested over a fifth of its national windfarm investment in this particular project at a sum of €145m invested in Meenadreen which is in a rural area south of Ardara.

The company says crucially, it will help to reduce Ireland’s carbon dioxide emissions by 100,000 tonnes each year.

Energia Renewables is among Ireland’s leading providers of sustainable green energy and 25% of Ireland’s wind power is provided through Energia to homes and businesses.

Managing Director, Peter Baillie says the company is very proud to have delivered this huge project and he has thanked the local community in Leghowney for their support.

The project in line with similar project in other areas invests money back into a local community fund.
