Melvin Gaels win north Leitrim derby

Melvin Gaels booked their place in the quarter-finals of this year’s Connacht Gold Leitrim senior football championship with an entertaining 2-9 to 1-10 win against north Leitrim neighbours Glencar/Manorhamilton on Saturday evening, in their final Group 1 game played in Carrick-on-Shannon.

James Phelan’s side had established a 2-7 to 1-2 lead over Glencar/Manor at one stage in the second-half, but the Group 1 leaders came storming back in the second-half and had reduced the deficit to a single point as the game entered added time.

But Darren Rooney fired over the insurance score in the dying seconds of the match to give the Kinlough club their third win of the group stages, which earns them a place in the last eight.

Glencar/Manor were already assured of a quarter-final place having finished top of Group 1. They will face Allen Gaels in the knockout stages on Sunday, September 15th.
