Easkey refuse to play league match on player welfare grounds

Easkey GAA club says it’s asking its club footballers not to play Saturday evening’s Furey’s Coaches Division 2 game against Curry because of concerns around player welfare.

The club has published a statement, attributed the club’s executive committee and Easkey’s football and hurling team managements, on the eve of two adult club fixtures, one in hurling and one in football.

Easkey are unhappy that they are being asked to play both games within hours of one another.

The Sea Blues are scheduled to play a Cúchulainn Cup quarter-final against Armagh side Céide Lamh Dhearg (Keady) on Saturday at 11:30, and then a Division 2 football league game against Curry later  (in Easkey) at 7pm.

Easkey say the hurling fixture had been in place for some considerable time, and that a date change for the football game  was requested by the club to Sligo GAA.

Easkey claim that request was rejected.

Given the club has several dual players involved in both fixtures, Easkey say they had no choice to opt out of one of the games – in the case the football league fixture.
