Sligo Rovers keeper Ed McGinty joins Oxford United

Sligo Rovers have confirmed that goalkeeper Edward McGinty has joined English League One side Oxford United for an undisclosed fee, rising to a six figure payment.

The news was confirmed just hours before Rovers take on Motherwell in the first leg of their Europa Conference League tie in Scotland.

McGinty has not travelled with the squad to Motherwell.

The Scot, who conicidently was born in Motherwell, produced a player-of-the-match display against Bala Town last week, saving two penalties in what proved to be his final match in a bit o’red shirt.

Rovers manager John Russell gave his reaction to McGinty’s departure to sligorovers.com:

‘’We were sorry to see Ed leave. It was emotional for everyone. Ed has been at this club for a number of years, and during that time we have seen him develop through our Academy and into our First Team where he became the number one goalkeeper.

“Ed has got all the attributes to go to the highest level so we knew this day would come eventually.
He has worked extremely hard and given his all for Sligo Rovers.”

McGinty published the following social media post on the club platforms on Thursday:
