Encouragement for Leitrim despite Kildare defeat

A gutsy Leitrim performance on the opening Sunday of the TG4 All-Ireland intermediate football championship ultimately came up short as Leinster champions Kildare emerged with a 5-10 to 4-8 win in their opening Group 1 game in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Leitrim had close to one point in the closing stages of the game but a late Kildare goal sealed the win for the visitors.

Leitrim are in a three-team group which also includes Louth.

They travel to Carlingford next Sunday for their concluding group game.

The top two counties from each of the four groups will qualify for the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

Leitrim manager Jonny Garrity spoke to Ocean FM Sport PJ Leddy after Sunday’s defeat.
