Motorsport Ireland spokesperson says Motorsport community are shocked by Sligo Rally deaths



A Motorsport Ireland spokesperson has paid tribute to the two competitors that died following an accident in the 2023 Sligo Stages Rally.

 

Art McCarrick says the events of yesterday have stunned the motorsport community in Ireland.

 

He has extended his sympathy to the families and friends of the men that lost their lives.

 

It’s understood both were experienced competitors with over 15 and 20 years of rallying accumulated over the years.

 

The two competitors, who have been named locally as Gene McDonald and Daire Maguire.

 

The men who were participating in the event were killed instantly when their rally car hit a wall at Carrowcushcly in Ballymote at around 3pm yesterday.

 

The bodies of the driver in his 30s and passenger in his 40s were later removed to Sligo University Hospital where post-mortems will take place today.

 

Gardai are asking that footage of the collision is not shared across social media or messaging apps.
