Mona McSharry wins gold at Euro under-23 championships

Sligo’s Mona McSharry won a superb gold medal on the opening evening of the LEN European U23 Swimming Championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin on Friday night.

She swam 30.37 seconds to take gold ahead of Italy’s Anita Bottazzo.

Speaking after the final, McSharry said: “I was just going out there trying to race, have some fun and get my hands on the wall first.

“This morning was a pretty good race and I was just trying to top that and go faster, and I did so I can’t but be happy with it and then to come out with a gold is just awesome. It’s a great way to start the meet.”

McSharry was one of three Irish swimmers to win gold with Daniel Wiffen and Ellen Walshe also winning finals on Friday evening.
