Donegal Gardaí issue scam warning

Gardaí in Donegal has issued a warning over the latest scam that’s doing the rounds.

They have been made aware of a scam text message in relation to a scam known as the ‘grandparent scam’.

Gardaí say that these scam messages are a random text message purporting to be from a family member stating that they require financial help or are in some sort of trouble which needs to be kept secret.

Gardaí are advising the public to be wary of unsolicited text messages from unknown numbers.

Gardaí are asking the public to verify the person’s identity and ask questions that a stranger couldn’t possibly answer.

Call a family member to verify if someone is operating under a different number even if you have been told to keep the story a secret.

Gardaí are urging the public to not volunteer information that the fraudsters can use to sound more credible, resist the urge to act immediately and call a family member to verify the story.

They are also warning that once money has been sent, it’s gone and cannot be recovered.
