Keeva Flynn sees red as Ireland U17s lose to Poland

The Republic of Ireland girls under-17 team lost 6-1 away to Poland in Wednesday’s Euro qualifier, played at Concordia Piotrków Trybunalski.

This was the third of three qualifiers for Ireland over the past nine days – Ireland have lost to Norway and Iceland in the previous two.

Sligo native, Keeva Flynn, winner of the Young Sportsperson of the Year award at last weekend’s Ocean FM Sports Awards, started Wednesday’s game at centre-half.

However, the 15-year-old received a red card during the game after being adjudged to have handled the ball inside the penalty area.

The Irish girls had taken lead in the opening half thanks to a Rebecca Devereaux goal – but the Poles equalised shortly afterwards and Flynn’s red card put the visitors under pressure for the remainder of the game with Poland scoring three goals in either half to eventually run out 6-1 winners.

Ireland: Clodagh Fitzgerald; Keira Sena (Amy Tierney 83), Keeva Flynn, Clodagh Daly, Lucy O’Rourke (Anna Hegarty 36); Eve O’Carroll, Emma Duffy, Katie Lawlee; Sorcha Melia (Aoibhe Brennan 66), Hazel Donegan (Hannah O’Brien 66), Rebecca Devereux (Katie O’Reilly 83).
