Dearbhla Rooney marks boxing return with national title

Glenade’s Dearbhla Rooney marked her return to the boxing ring in 2023 with national senior title on Saturday night at the National Stadium in Dublin.

A talented underage boxer for several seasons winning a silver medal for Ireland at the 2018 European Youth Championships, Rooney had stepped away from the ring in recent seasons to concentrate on other sports, notably gaelic football.

She has been a mainstay of Glencar/Manorhamilton’s recent four-in-a-row of Leitrim LGFA senior club football titles.

But this season, she resumed training at Sean McDermott Boxing Gym in Manorhamilton and her hard work was rewarded on Saturday when she beat Aisling Keogh from St Mary’s Boxing Club in Dublin in the 63kg final to win her first national senior title.
