Man arrested in connection with attack on the late Tom Niland

A man has been arrested in connection with the attack on the late Tom Niland in his home in Skreen last year.

The aggravated burglary happened on the 18th January 2022.

Mr. Niland died in hospital in September – 20 months after being violently assaulted in his home.

The 75 year old had been in hospital since the aggravated burglary on 18th January last year – he never recovered from the injuries sustained in the attack.

At his Funeral Mass last month, Parish Priest Fr Michael Gilroy said that while “there is a profound sadness at Tom’s leaving us, there is also a sense of relief that Tom’s suffering is over and that he is now at peace with God”.

Gardai confirmed that a man who’s in his 60s has been arrested today in relation to the incident.

He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and is being held at a Garda Station in Sligo.

Three other men have been charged in relation to this incident and have appeared before the courts.

Gardai say that investigations are ongoing and no further information is available at this time.
