Potential phone ban in primary schools a step in the right direction

A Sligo Councillor says parents of primary school children are being handed an opportunity to prevent the next pandemic that will impact youngsters.

Sligo Strandhill Councillor, Sinead Maguire made the comments as the Education Minister will seek cabinet backing today for moves to curtail the use of mobile phones in primary schools.

While Norma Foley’s plan does not amount to an all-out ban on the devices, it will seek the views of parents through schools surveys.

In schools where a majority of parents agree not to give their children phones, then all parents will be asked to join the initiative.

Councillor Maguire has been a long-time advocate of banning mobile phones from both primary and post-primary schools.

The Fine Gael Councillor says students need to be protected from the threat of cyber bullying.
