Covert recording device discovered in Sligo healthcare facility

It’s been revealed that a covert recording device was discovered at a Sligo healthcare facility by HSE staff last year.

The incident is said to be one of 615 data breaches nationwide in which personal or medical information relating to patients and other individuals was inadvertently exposed to third parties during 2023.

According to the Irish Mirror, the device was discovered last year but the HSE does not know how long it had remained concealed in the community healthcare facility in Sligo before it was found.

In a statement, the HSE says it manages all breaches of data protection in line with data protection legislation and HSE policy. As appropriate under legislation we report breaches to the Data Protection Commission.

The HSE cannot comment on individual cases.
