Sligo train driver ‘did all he could’, inquest hears

An inquest into the death of a woman who was killed after being struck by a train in Sligo has heard that she had alcohol, cocaine and prescription drugs in her system.

Jessica McLoughlin, who was 40, died at the scene last June.

The inquest heard the account of train driver Padraig O’Gara who said that he applied the emergency brakes and blew the horn and that the two women present moved to the side of the track.

He added that one woman jumped clear while the other one didn’t.

The other woman present at the time was Ms. McLaughlin’s niece Rebecca Leydon.

She was also injured in the incident, sustaining a broken leg.

The inquest heard that Ms. Leydon felt guilty as they decided to get off the 15.05 train and walk back along the tracks because she had forgotten her phone in a shop in Collooney.

Following the post mortem, the coroner ruled that Ms. McLaughlin had died following injuries sustained after colliding with the train, against the backdrop of drug and alcohol intoxication.

The Coroner Eamonn MacGowan also told driver Padraig O’Gara that he did all that he could and could not have done anything else.
