A number of arrests and seizures have been made by Gardaí in Donegal in the opening stages of the Donegal rally.
Ireland’s biggest road rally begins today and will run until Sunday, but many started to travel for the event yesterday.
On Thursday, Gardaí seized six vehicles in Letterkenny. Reasons for the seizures included drivers being uninsured, the cars being defective, and a lack of tax and NCT.
One of those vehicles was seized after it was found to have a makeshift braking system. The driver will have to appear in court at a later date.
In one instance, Gardaí from Buncrana were assisted by the Dog Unit, the RSA and the Customs Unit. Arrests were made and a number of fixed charge penalty notices were issued.
Buncrana Roads Policing Unit also arrested a driver outside Letterkenny last night on suspicion of drug driving after they had tested positive for cocaine.
This morning, Gardaí in Ballyshannon seized a car that had four bald tyres, and all documentation for the car was found to be false or altered. The driver and two passengers were not wearing seatbelts, and fixed charge penalty notices were also handed down.
And earlier on today, a driver in Muff was arrested after they were spotted performing dangerous manouevres on the road by a Garda on a motorbike.
Gardaí are reminding all drivers in Donegal to adhere to the rules of the road in order to have a safe and enjoyable weekend.
