Many local towns no longer suitable for the visually impaired

An all too regular correspondence to ‘North West Today’ comes in from people that are visually impaired and are facing huge challenges in trying to walk through our towns and villages due to the many obstacles that are in their way from cars parked on footpaths or from the likes of sandwich boards and advertising boards that are situated on footpaths.

For instance in recent days we have had calls about obstacles that are placed on footpaths in Donegal town.

The footpaths have been widened for accessibility however some local restaurants have put out tables and chairs on the widened footpaths and there are a number of businesses with sandwich boards outside them.

Now this problem is not unique to just Donegal, a new Survey has revealed that 77% of blind and vision-impaired people have been injured by footpath obstacles.

Jackie McBrearty has been visually impaired since the age of 16 she earlier joined John Lynch on this morning’s show.
