Sligo-Leitrim Fine Gael convention takes place this evening

Fine Gael members in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency are holding their selection convention for the next General Election this evening.

Three candidates have been nominated.

They are sitting TD, Frank Feighan, sitting Councillor Thomas Walsh and former Minister of State, John Perry.

Deputy Feighan will look to retain the seat he won in the 2020 General Election.

That was the first time the Boyle native contested the Sligo-Leitrim constituency having previously being part of Roscommon-South Leitrim.

Councillor Walsh contested the 2020 General Election, picking up 4,760 first preference votes. He topped the poll in June’s local elections in the Sligo-Drumcliffe electoral area.

While John Perry announced his return to the Fine Gael party earlier this year. He previously served in the Dáil from 1997 to 2016. He contested to 2020 General Election as an Independent candidate.

It is not yet known what strategy the party will take with three candidates contesting the convention.

Tonight’s convention is taking place in the Clayton Hotel in Sligo at 6pm.
