Smugglers’ ship, MV Shingle, has sunk in Killala Bay

A ship seized as part of a major tobacco seizure ten years ago, is being deliberately sunk in Mayo today.

It’s being done to create the country’s first artificial reef.

The MV Shingle, a former smuggling vessel, is going under the water at Killala Bay.

It’s hoped the artificial reef will encourage more diving tourism in the west, and boost local marine ecology.
