Calls for urgent upgrade to Ballisodare wastewater treatment plant

There’s urgent calls on Uisce Eireann to upgrade the wastewater treatment plant in Ballisodare in the wake of mass salmon deaths in the river over the summer.

It follows the conclusion of Inland Fisheries Ireland’s investigation.

The IFI found that there was no pollution in the Ballisodare River system, but identified a number of factors that could have contributed to death of almost 1,100 salmon.

According to the report, some of the potential causes included low water levels, a large number of fish returning, and breaches in the wastewater treatment plant.
