172 homeless in north west in May

172 people were homeless across the north west in May of this year.

The figures were confirmed in the monthly Homelessness Report, released by the Department of Housing.

Sligo saw the highest number of homeless people across the month of May, with 88. That was followed up by 69 in Donegal, and 15 in Leitrim.

140 of the north west’s total were single adults, 117 of which were male and 55 females.

21 of those were aged between 18-24, 88 between ages 24-44, 58 between ages 45-64, and 5 who were 65 and over.

126 in the north west were Irish citizens.

There were 23 homeless families in the region throughout May, and 17 of those were single-parent families. There were 53 child dependents included.

The North West’s total accounted for 2% of the national figure, which stands at 9,803.
