200 letters of objection lodged against Council plans for Sligo halting site

More than 200 letters were handed over to Sligo County Council yesterday afternoon with objections to proposed work on a halting site for Travellers.

The plans are for the Glenview Halting Site.

It is proposed to continue to house the long term residents the Ward family as well as members of the McGinley family who have lived for 30 years in a local authority car park at Connaughton Road in Sligo.

However, members of the Traveller community say it's not realistic for the two families to live on the same site.

Letters of objection handed in yesterday came from Pavee Point, an advocacy group for Travellers, as well as from the Irish Traveller Movement and the National Traveller Women's Forum.

Bernadette Maughan, manager of the Sligo Traveller Support Group, claims some of the long-term residents in Glenview will be made homeless if the council's proposal goes ahead:
