A 30 kilometre per hour speed limit is being introduced in more than 170 local authority housing estates throughout Sligo town and county from the start of next year.

It follows a decision by Sligo councillors at their meeting this week.

The council's road design department carried out a survey of roads in 344 housing estates estates.

Area engineering staff then compiled a list of 174 in which the 30kph limit will be imposed.

Some housing estates already have a 50kph limit and this has to be revoked in those estates before the new 30kph limit can be applied.

This process will start as part of a review of speed limits on national and non-national roads, which will begin soon.

Estates not in county council charge cannot be considered for the new speed reduction.
