Sligo County Council has admitted that the absence of a litter warden is causing 'significant difficulties' in dealing with illegal dumping in the county.

The problem is particularly common in quiet rural areas.

At this week's council meeting, Fianna Fail Councillor Martin Baker asked that cameras be put in place at Rusheen and Drumfin, both near Riverstown, to stop such dumping.

Director of Services Tom Kilfeather replied that it is accepted that illegal dumping is a significant issue.

He said interviews to fill the vacant litter warden position will be scheduled shortly.

Meanwhile, it's understood the council is buying cameras which will be used where illegal dumping is taking place.
