After windy night, motorists urged to beware this morning

Gardai and local authorities are urging motorists to drive with caution this morning because of fallen debris on the roads after strong winds last night.

Sligo County Council says storm conditions and severe gusts resulted in fallen trees all over the county.

Roads crews and Fire Service personnel attended incidents in Ballymote, Calry, Cloonamahon, on the Ballina road from Sligo, around SligoTown, Strandhill Road and Ballincar.

A tree and a pole came down on the Ballydevitt Road in Donegal Town.

In the Ballyshannon area, a number of trees came down, including one at The Mall in the town, but these have now been removed.

It was a similar situation in the south Sligo area and there are no reports at present of any roads blocked in the area.

Council workers and fire service personnel in the region have been out throughout the night clearing any fallen trees, branches and other debris.

In addition to the danger of fallen trees and branches, there is the hazard of other debris on footpaths and roads, and pedestrians in urban areas are asked to beware of fallen slates.

There have also been power outages in areas throughout the region.
