A former Secondary School Vice principal says the government's plans to introduce Air Filtration systems into schools is coming too late in the academic year.
Teachers and schools have already requested guidance on how to spend Government money correctly to improve ventilation.
Funding was announced yesterday under the minor works grant and can also be used for a number of other school improvements.
€45 million will be allocated to primary schools as part of additional support in the context of Covid-19," while post-primary schools are being given €17 million.
Minister Foley said that it would be up to individual schools to decide how best to use the funding to address their particular needs.
"This significant increase in funding for schools will enable them to address both their minor works requirements and also to address small-scale ventilation improvements at school level as a short-term mitigation measure, should they require to do so," she said.
Air filters have been suggested as a possible way to improve air quality in the environment.
Former teacher and Vice Principal Sean Wynne says it's unlikely that all classrooms will have the systems in place in time for the winter season.
He says having teachers and students in classrooms with windows open at this time of year is far from ideal.
