Almost 24,000 cars failed the NCT test across the north west in the first six months of 2024.
The statistics were made available on the official NCT website.
In total, just over 44,500 tests were carried out in Sligo, Carrick on Shannon, Donegal Town and Letterkenny centres from January to June.
Letterkenny was found to have the highest pass rate, with 6,585 passes, which is 48.15% in total.
That was followed by Sligo, with a pass rate of 46.68%. That was marginally better than 45.48% in Donegal Town.
Carrick-on-Shannon came in with a pass rate of 42.86%.
Across the four centres, there was a total of 23,983 failures. 20,337 of those were major failures, with the remaining 3,646 listed as dangerous failures.
Letterkenny saw the highest amount of dangerous failures, with 1,809. That was followed by Sligo, with 1,082.
Carrick-on-Shannon was next, with 903 dangerous failures, while Donegal Town had the least, with 572.
In total, the pass rate for the region was 46.17%, the major failure rate came in at 45.64%, with the dangerous failure rate accounting for 8.18% of the overall total.
