An angler has been fined and their equipment seized after a non-native live goldfish was "purportedly obtained from a pet shop” as live bait in Boyle.
Another smaller dead goldfish was found in a container of water nearby.
Inland Fisheries Ireland have confirmed that while conducting a patrol, Leitrim-based officers detected the incident.
They say that the incident is in breach of the Use of Live Fish as Bait in Fresh Water Bye-law No. 592, 1977.
A €150 fixed charge penalty notice was issued.
The IFI conclude by saying the vast majority of anglers in Ireland fish responsibly and sustainably and abide by relevant State regulations.
