The Labour Party has co-opted Ann Higgins to replace Senator Nessa Cosgrove on Sligo County Council.

The party locally held a selection convention last evening, following the recent election of Nessa Cosgrove to the Seanad.

In a statement Chairperson of the Sligo Branch of the Labour Party Mary Dolan-McLoughlinn described Nessa Cosgrove as a fantastic representative of the Labour Party on the ground in Sligo-Strandhill, as both a Local Area Representative and more recently as a County Councillor.

Senator Cosgrove will be expanding her role so she can represent people from all over the West, North West and Border regions as well as low-paid workers everywhere.

Ms Dolan-McLoughlinn says that a number of individuals, both from within and outside of the Labour Party, expressed an interest in serving as a Labour Party Councillor for Sligo-Strandhill.

Following an extensive internal process two extremely strong candidates were nominated and a vote of members was held yesterday afternoon.

Ann Higgins was subsequently selected to represent the Labour Party on Sligo County Council for the next four years, and that it is her intention to stand for election when the Local Elections next occur in 2029.
