An attempted murder investigation has been launched after an off-duty police officer was shot at a sports complex in County Tyrone last night.
The senior officer was shot several times.
The PSNI have confirmed that Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell was attacked by two masked men as he was putting away training gear into the boot of his car.
Mr Caldwell is said to be in a critical but stable condition in hospital in Derry.
Police say the dissident Republican group, the new IRA, are the primary focus of their investigation.

The Tánaiste says the attempted murder of the PSNI officer at a sports complex in front of children 'represents a new low' for such criminal activity.
