It has emerged that ATU Sligo students did not stage a walkout during today’s student protest at half past eleven this morning.
The protest was organised by the Union of Students in Ireland, who raised issues with accommodation, fees and public transport costs.
ATU’s reasoning behind not participating in the walkout was due to unforeseen officer and staff shortages.
However, ATU Sligo’s Students’ Union plan to make a speech at Sligo County Council’s general meeting in the first week of November.
ATU Sligo’s Students’ Union made the following statement.
“ATU Sligo Students’ Union stands in full support of the national students walk out today.
With it being the busiest time of the year and due to unforeseen officer and staff shortages we were unable to organise the local walk out in Sligo. We are focusing on making sure that all our services are functioning during this period.
We will have a speech at the County Council general meeting in the first week of November. We are looking at doing a peaceful protest in front of the building that day to ensure that student issues are being dealt with.
ATUSSU have been a part of important discussions in regard to advocating for our local students’ rights and focusing on highlighting local issues to the University and County Council. We are also working closely with fellow ATU Students’ Unions and the University to work on improving the college experience. We will continue to advocate for our students’ rights and make sure that your voices are being heard.
We stand in full support of all the work USI and Students’ Unions are doing to advocate for student rights. We are looking forward to future opportunities where we can join in to support our students.”
