The town of Ballymote in south Sligo will have a special interest in next year's presidential election in the United States.
Among the candidates who have now declared is former two-time mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg, who visited Ballymote in 2006.
The multi-billionaire arrived in his private jet at Ireland West Airport at Knock and travelled to Ballymote where he unveiled Ireland's national monument to the famous Fighting 69th Regiment that fought in the American Civil War, led by General Michael Corcorcan, who was born near Ballymote.
The monument includes steel from the World Trade Centre that was attacked on September 11th 2001.
Mr Bloomberg came to Ballymote at the invitation of the local Sligo/Leitrim TD at the time, John Perry.
Speaking to Ocean FM News today, Mr Perry recalled the visit, and says he thinks Mr Bloomberg would make a fantastic president.
