The bishop of the catholic diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnois, Francis Duffy, is to be the new archbishop of Tuam.
Ardagh and Clonmacnoise covers most of counties Longford and Leitrim, as well as parts of a number of other counties, including Sligo and Cavan.
The Archdiocese of Tuam contains parts of counties Mayo, Galway and Roscommon, and includes the major pilgrimage centres of Knock Shrine and Croagh Patrick.
Pope Francis's appointment of Bishop Duffy as the new archbishop of Tuam was announced this morning during Mass in the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Tuam.
Bishop Duffy succeeds the outgoing archbishop of Tuam Michael Neary.
Among those congratulating Archbishop-elect Duffy was the Bishop of Elphin, Kevin Doran, who also paid tribute to Archbishop Michael Neary on his retirement.
Speaking at Mass this morning, Bishop Duffy, spoke of his appointment by the Pope.
He also said he was sad to leaving the diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnois.
