Border group calls for clarity for motorists if there's a no-deal Brexit

A Border group says the government needs to clarify the measures in place for motorists regarding their insurance cover in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Transport Minister Shane Ross was unable to say if motorists who cross the Border without a special 'green card' as proof of insurance cover will be prosecuted.

Minister Ross has confirmed the cards would be required by motorists the day after Brexit is due to happen on March 29 if there is no deal.

At present the European Union covers motorists who drive in another member state but if Britain leaves the EU then this would be withdrawn.

Coordinator of Border Communities Against Brexit, Damian McGenity, says there will also be a severe impact on the haulage industry in the region.

Speaking before the Oireachtas Transport Committee Minister Shane Ross addressed some of the issues concerning haulers.
