Sligo County Council is calling for all school secretaries to be treated the same.
A meeting of the council heard there can be a difference of up to €10,000 a year in what school secretaries are paid.
The difference arises because some secretaries are employed by the Department of Education while the majority, about 90%, are employed by individual schools.
Fianna Fail Councillor Seamus Kilgannon says such a two-tier pay structure isn't fair.
