Call for west Sligo to be policed by gardai from Ballina

There's been a call for west Sligo to be policed by gardai from the Ballina area.

West Sligo currently comes under the jurisdiction of Ballymote, Co Sligo, gardai -- but many local people point out that Ballina, just across the border in Mayo, is much nearer.

The latest call follows a number of breakins and burglaries early on Sunday morning last in west Sligo during which Rathlee church, a business in the area, and at least one private house was broken into.

The new chairman of the Ballymote/Tubbercurry/West Sligo municipal district of Sligo County Council, Fianna Fail Councillor Joe Queenan, says breaking into a church is a new low:
