A Donegal TD has stressed that all nursing homes and residential homes for people with disabilities should be state-funded and not-for-profit.
This comes amid recent closures of nursing homes across the country, particularly in the North West, as in Donegal alone, there had been a decrease of 43 beds in 2022.
There has also been a significant increase of nursing homes in private ownership, with them operating 77% of designated centres in Ireland, with 81% of the nursing home beds.
Independent TD Thomas Pringle says we need to discourage care homes driven purely for profit.
