Campaign underway to improve neurology services in north west

A campaign is underway to improve neurology services in the north west.

It includes calls for four more nurse specialists in neurology in Sligo, where there are only three at present.

The Neurological Alliance of Ireland says increasing the number of nurse specialists will reduce waiting times, free up hospital resources and improve services for neurology patients in the region.

Speaking on the North West Today Show, Magdalen Rogers, the executive director of the Neurological Alliance of Ireland, explained the key role of nurse specialists in neurology.

This morning in the Dail, the situation with regard to neurology services in the north west was outlined by Sligo/Leitrim Fianna Fail TD Marc MacSharry.

Replying, Mary Butler, minister of state with responsibility for mental health and older people, said a final decision on funding is awaited pending completion of a new HSE service plan.

She gave a commitment to Deputy MacSharry she would raise the issue with Health Minister Stephen Donnelly.

However, Deputy MacSharry said 'talk is cheap'

'Where's the staff, where's the recruitment,' he asked.
