Concern has been expressed locally that any restriction on the sale and distribution of turf could pave the way for an outright ban in the future.

 

Revised regulations mean people with cutting rights will be able to continue to sell or gift turf to family, neighbours or friends.

However the sale of turf online or in the likes of shops and petrol stations will be banned in a bid to improve air quality.

 

Manorhamilton MD Councillor Padraig Fallon previously tabled a motion requesting the Government to allow homes to burn turf in a time of rising fuel costs.

Giving a cautious welcome to the fresh plans, Cllr Fallon says an outright ban was a ludicrous suggestion:
