Sligo County Council has confirmed that they received a report of a restricted breed dog, an XL Bully dog, accompanying a female jogger in Slish wood without a lead or muzzle.
The incident was said to have happened at around 4pm last Tuesday 11th June.
In a statement, the Council says that this is one of a number of recent reports to them over restricted breed dogs being exercised without a lead/muzzle in the County.
Given the recent tragedy in Limerick and the attack in Donegal at the weekend, the Council says that it is vitally important that owners of these dogs ensure that they are on a lead and muzzled at all times when in public areas.
The breeds listed in the Control of Dogs Regulations include the American Pit Bull Terrier, English Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd (Alsatian), Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler, Japanese Akita, Japanese Tosa and every dog of the type commonly known as a Ban Dog (or Bandog). As a cross of restricted breeds, XL Bully dogs are subject to the same restrictions.
The fine for having a restricted breed dog not muzzled/on a lead is now €300.
