A local Councillor is raising concern that that the Garda Station in Sligo Town will not be issued a Disabled Access Certificate following refurbishments.
Garda Stations, courthouses, Defence Forces barracks and buildings used by or in connection with a number of government buildings are exempt under the Building Control Regulations 1997.
Independent Sligo Councillor, Marie Casserly submitted a motion asking about the certificate where she was told one would not be issued after refurbishments have been completed.
She says that people with a disability wouldn't be able to work in the Sligo Garda Station and believes it is a breach of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Councillor Casserly inquired about disability access for the station as a whole after refurbishments at recent a Joint Policing Committee meeting where she was told 90% of the building will be inaccessible to people with a disability.
